SMALL, BUT PERFECTLY FORMED!

A cursory glance at the scorecard reveals a course that measures less than 6,000 yards from the competition tees and only 5480 yards when played from the normal markers. A course that on paper should be a stroll in a park, but in reality is anything but!

True, the fairways are, in places generous with gently rolling contours.

True, there are only two Par 4’s that measure over 400 yards and there are a couple that will tempt big hitters to have a go for the green.

True, both of the par 5’s will be in range for two shots and not just for players of prodigious length.

True, the par of the course is only 68 and contains six par 3 holes.

By now you may be thinking that the course will be a pushover, but before you do, consider this…..

There is nearly 700,000 square yards of sculptured bunkering, not to mention the sand waste areas! If you manage to complete your round without using your sand iron you will have played very well indeed.

There are three large lakes which come into play on seven holes.

Three of the par 3 holes measure around 200 yards or over and require a carry over water to reach the green. The others necessitate a carry over a Sea of Sand!!

La Torre is a superbly strategic course, a course that requires brains over brawn. This is perfectly illustrated by the two par 5 holes, both of which are reachable, but both of which will need a second shot of Herculean proportions to carry over a myriad of sand to land on the putting surface. Lay up and a shot of some accuracy will be needed to find the slim slither of fairway just short of the greens.

There are a number of holes, particularly on the inward nine where a bunker stretches from tee to green but non more so than the 10th and 18th holes which run parallel separated by a never ending bunker, Hells Half Acre!!!

La Torre may never host a major professional tournament…So What!

It is pure fun to play, a pleasant change from the long slogs that most new courses present.

It is above all….

SMALL, BUT PERFECTLY FORMED!
